PC, Mac & Arcade Machine

The inspiration for the Slidey Tanks game mechanic originally came from the Tanks minigame from Wii Play, where players control a tank from a top down perspective, and have to battle their way through 100 pre-made levels. My interpretation originally revolved around implementing a more complicated control system, involving a WiiMote. I realised early on that this was over the scope of the project, and most likely be more frustrating than enjoyable.
I came to the conclusion that a great modern implementation of the top down shooter would use the the recoil as the way of movement. The tank would shoot, and the player would slide backwards. Initially a very simple idea, but as soon as I had a basic two player mode implemented, people were loving it. I saw potential for it a as a competitive couch coop game.
I created prototype after prototype, tweaking the controls and adding various smaller mechanics such as charged shots and boost plates. Each time I added a new feature, I was able to test it on an audience at our Demo or Die sessions. After every session, I wrote a blog post keeping track of the results of my questionnaire, and how it would effect the coming weeks of development. Later on in the development of Slidey Tanks I had the oppurtunity to adapt the game to work on the arcade machine owned by the course (see left). I would really like to revisit Slidey Tanks in the future, and possibly start to gear it further towards mobile, as I believe this sort of title has more potential in the app market.
